As the first “Design Capital” in China, how strong are the industrial designers in Shenzhen? There are 13 national level industrial design centers, 123 provincial level centers, and 98 municipal level centers, which are among the top tier in the country. Moreover, since the first local industrial design policy was introduced in China in 2012, the annual income of industrial design professional services has increased by 12 times in 11 years. By 2022, the total output value reached 45 billion yuan. Not only did they earn more, but they also increased income together with upstream and downstream industries, which has a visible and tangible effect on improving the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing industry.
Speaking of professional strength, in 2021, Shenzhen became one of the first batch of service-oriented manufacturing demonstration cities for industrial design characteristics in China. Currently, there are more than 22000 industrial design institutions and 1400 professional companies in the city, of which nearly half are national, provincial, and municipal high-tech enterprises, making it a perfect “design+technology” dual player.
On the international stage, it is even more eye-catching. Since 2012, iF、 Red Dot has won these international awards with ease, ranking first in the number of major cities in China. Many well-known manufacturing companies at home and abroad are willing to entrust their core projects to design companies in Shenzhen, and even international brands are commissioned to design for overseas markets, bringing “Made in Shenzhen” to open the door to the international market faster.
Currently, Shenzhen’s industrial design is still providing support to the “20+8” industrial cluster, promoting system integration and innovation in manufacturing, and moving towards intelligent and digital development, helping Shenzhen build a globally leading advanced manufacturing center.
