From ‘Form Following Function’ to ‘Form Following Data and Experience’

Traditional industrial design follows the principle of “form follows function”. And the intervention of AI has enabled forms to start following data streams, algorithms, and personalized experiences. The physical form of a product is no longer solely designed to accommodate hardware, but also to optimize data collection (such as sensor layout), processing (such as heat dissipation and structure), and expression (such as flexible screens and dynamic interfaces). The goal of design has evolved from creating static beauty to designing a complete set of dynamic intelligent systems that engage in continuous dialogue with the environment and users.

Disruptive design process: AI as a co creation partner

AI is becoming a “super assistant” and “inspiration co creation partner” for designers.

Forward looking research and trend insights: AI can quickly analyze massive user feedback, social media data, and market reports, revealing deep needs and future trends that even users themselves may not be aware of, providing precise direction for design projects.

Generative Design Unlimited Creativity: In the design concept stage, designers only need to input constraints (such as cost, materials, manufacturing process, weight), and AI algorithms can generate thousands of innovative structural solutions that meet the requirements and are unconventional, for designers to screen and optimize, greatly expanding the boundaries of creativity.

Accelerator for Simulation and Iteration: During the prototype testing phase, AI driven simulation can predict the performance of products in countless real-world scenarios (such as durability, human-computer interaction experience), shortening physical testing that originally required months to just a few days and achieving unprecedented iteration speeds.

Adaptive interface: The product interface can automatically adjust based on user identity, emotions, or ambient light. For example, the ambient lighting and screen content of car interiors change with driving mode or driver fatigue state, creating an immersive experience.

Emotional interaction: Through voice, visual recognition, and data analysis, AI enables products to perceive user emotions and provide personified responses. A smart speaker is no longer just a tool for playing music, but a life partner who can care about your emotions through tone, lighting effects, and content recommendations.

Ultimate personalization and sustainability

Large scale personalized manufacturing: AI analyzes personal data (body shape, habits, preferences), drives flexible production lines, generates unique design solutions for each person and produces them, truly achieving the goal of “designing a thousand products for a thousand people”.

Predictive maintenance and sustainable development: AI can predict when products need maintenance or replacement parts, proactively remind users, thereby extending product lifespan and reducing electronic waste. Design considers the entire lifecycle of the product from the beginning, moving towards truly sustainable design.
