Pre sales communication is far more than just inquiry and quotation, it is also a “stress test” for both parties to establish trust and accurately understand project goals. Today, we will summarize our communication experience over the years into a “four step method” to help every client with rendering needs avoid common misconceptions and efficiently initiate projects.

Step 1: First, clarify the purpose, and then we can discuss the plan and price

Common misconception: Many friends ask, “How much does it cost to make a rendering?” This is a very difficult question to answer, just like asking, “How much does a house cost?” – high-rise apartments, rural villas, or city center flat floors? The answer is vastly different.

A product image for an e-commerce detail page and an advertising image to be placed on the Times Square giant screen have completely different requirements for accuracy, detail, and rendering technology, corresponding to vastly different production costs and team configurations.

Our suggestion:
At the beginning of the communication, please tell us the ‘ultimate mission’ of this batch of renderings:

Is it used for e-commerce platforms (main image/detail page)?

Is it used for offline exhibitions or large screen advertising?

Is it used for internal review during the product design phase?

Or is it used for making brochures or PPTs?

Once the purpose is clear, we (NineIdea) can judge the difficulty of the project for you at the first time, match the most appropriate solutions and resources, and give a meaningful quotation range.

Step 2: Reference pictures speak louder than words, making style visible

Common Misconception: Customers often use terms such as “high-end”, “textured”, “technologically advanced” to describe their needs. These descriptions are very subjective, and your sense of ‘technology’ may be cool toned blue light, while in our understanding, it may be a cyberpunk filled with lines.

Language is extremely inefficient in conveying specific visual information, and can easily lead to misunderstandings, resulting in the need for repeated modifications to the finished product.

Our suggestion:
Please take a few minutes to collect some ‘reference pictures’ before communication. This can greatly improve communication efficiency and accurately target your preferences.

Style reference: A picture of the overall atmosphere and color tone that you like.

Composition reference: Your preferred camera angle, scene, and image layout.

Texture reference: The specific material feel you want the product surface to present (such as frosted metal, transparent glass, wood texture, etc.).

After you provide the reference image, our understanding of the style will be highly consistent, and we can evaluate a more accurate quotation for you.

Step 3: Sort out the project overview and use planning to reduce costs

Common misconception: After understanding the price range for a single rendered image, some customers may simply use “unit price x quantity” to calculate the total price, only to find that the total budget far exceeds expectations.

This is because the cost of 3D projects mainly consists of “modeling cost” and “rendering cost”. Building a detailed 3D model for a product is one of the main costs, but once the model is built, it can be reused for multi angle and multi scene rendering of the product. When evenly distributed, the cost of rendering a single image will significantly decrease.

Our suggestion:
Please prepare a clear ‘Requirements List’ in advance, such as:

We have N products.

Each product requires N pure base images (displaying the structure) and N scene rendering images (displaying the application).

And attach the reference images you found for each type of image.

In this way, we (NineIdea) can design more cost-effective project packages for you based on your overall planning, and effectively help you control the total cost.

Step 4: Inventory your existing assets, which are the “accelerators” of the project

Common misconception: In communication, clients often overlook introducing their existing project related assets. And these assets are often “treasures” that save costs and time.

Our suggestion:
When communicating, please make sure to inform us if you have any of the following information:

3D original engineering files: If you can provide the 3D source files of the product (such as rhino.max,. mb,. c4d.stp, etc.), we will save a lot of time in rebuilding the model, and the cost and cycle will be significantly reduced.

Brand visual standards: such as clear Pantone color codes, vector logos, standard fonts, etc., can ensure that the rendering results are completely consistent with your brand image.

Product physical photos/design drawings: Multi angle physical photos or precise CAD drawings can help us restore product details and materials to the extreme.

A thorough and efficient pre-sales communication is far superior to countless’ emergency fires’ during project execution. We hope that the above practical experience from NineIdea (www.nineidea. com) can help you successfully launch your next product rendering project.
