Product Design of BMW Motorrad CH4 Supercar Concept Car
NINEIDEA: This product design of the supercar concept car created by Dutch designer Sabino Leerentveld, officially known as BMW Motorrad CH4, is an unofficial independent design project aimed at exploring the future shape and performance boundaries of BMW motorcycles.
Design concept and inspiration
- Core goal: Sabino aims to create a “futuristic BMW” that retains the brand’s endurance racing genes while being restructured with a highly impactful futuristic body.
- Style tracing: The design blends the aggressive silhouette of the classic Caf é Racer with the futuristic aesthetics of Cyberpunk 2077, with some media even linking it to the geometric lines of the Iron Man helmet.
- Function first: This is not only a visual experiment, but also the ultimate interpretation of “form follows function” – every line serves aerodynamics and maneuverability.
Key design features
- Structure and Material
- Adopting a traditional steel pipe frame, coupled with a large number of carbon fiber components (rear rocker arm, front and rear fenders, body coverings), to achieve a balance between lightweight and strength.
- The exposed Trellis frame creates a strong visual contrast with the thick lower air deflector, showcasing both mechanical aesthetics and optimizing aerodynamics.
- Body and posture
- The long wheelbase and low center of gravity design, combined with the wide rear wheels and slender front wheels, create a ready to move posture.
- The seat is level with the fuel tank, and the foot pedal position is moved backwards, forcing the rider to adopt a forward leaning combat posture, emphasizing pure driving pleasure.
- Details and Identification
- The BMW logo cleverly integrates into the top of the air filter instead of the traditional side profile, maintaining overall simplicity.
- The exhaust system seamlessly integrates with the body, while the LED headlights and taillights adopt a futuristic edge lighting design.
color scheme
- Provide multiple dual tone coatings:
- Metallic silver and bright yellow (the main color tone in the picture) pay tribute to BMW’s classic racing livery.
- Cold white and black, suitable for daily commuting scenes.
- Metallic silver and light blue present a sense of technology and futurism.
Performance and Positioning
- The original design intention is a supercar focused on agility, which can flexibly shuttle through urban traffic and unleash ultimate performance on the track.
- Although the concept diagram retains the traditional internal combustion engine and exhaust system, the designer has also envisioned using it as a carrier for electric motorcycles to adapt to future sustainable travel trends.
BMW Motorrad CH4 Design Sketch and Rendering Comparison Checklist
- Early concept sketch stage
- Core exploration: Designer Sabino first explored three completely different directions through a large number of drafts:
- Coffee racing retro style: retaining the classic fuel tank to seat ratio, but with sharper lines.
- Cyberpunk mecha style: emphasizing exposed mechanical structures and sharp body panels.
- Streamlined Future Style: Pursuing the ultimate smooth aerodynamic shape, weakening the mechanical feel.
- Key decision: We ultimately chose “Mech Wind” as the main direction because it best embodies the power and technology of BMW motorcycles.
- 3D modeling and structural refinement
- Frame and suspension: In the 3D model, the geometric structure of the Trellis frame was optimized to ensure that it is visually robust and lightweight. The design of the rear rocker arm has undergone multiple iterations, evolving from a solid structure to a final hollow carbon fiber structure to reduce the weight under the spring.
- Ergonomics: By adjusting the seat height, foot pedal position, and handlebar angle, the forward leaning combat posture is ensured, while also ensuring comfort for long-term cycling.
- Material and Light and Shadow Testing
- Material comparison: The designer tested various material combinations, including a full carbon fiber body, a mixture of metal and carbon fiber, and matte and glossy coatings. The combination of “metallic silver+bright yellow” was ultimately determined because it can present a rich sense of layering under different lighting conditions.
- Light and shadow expression: By adjusting ambient light and reflection, the curves and edges of the car body are highlighted, enhancing the sense of futurism.
- Final rendering and final design draft
- Visual Focus: The final version places the BMW logo on top of the air filter, becoming the visual center.
- Exquisite details: The shape of the exhaust system, the edge lighting effect of the LED light group, and the tire tread design have all been finely adjusted in the final stage to ensure overall harmony and unity.
