Core turning point in the development of industrial design in Shenzhen

Strong promotion of policy support

In 2012, the Shenzhen Municipal Government issued the “Several Measures to Accelerate the Development of Industrial Design Industry”, which was like timely rain, injecting strong impetus into the industrial design industry in Shenzhen. Through a series of measures such as financial support, tax incentives, and talent cultivation, the vitality of the industry has been greatly stimulated. Many design companies have been able to rapidly expand under policy support, attracting a large number of outstanding designers to gather in Shenzhen.

For example, some small design studios have taken advantage of this opportunity to expand their teams, purchase advanced equipment, undertake more challenging projects, and gradually grow into industry backbone forces. In 2020, Shenzhen issued the “Several Measures to Further Promote the Development of Industrial Design”, further improving the support system for innovative development of industrial design, helping the industry to continue upgrading, and enabling Shenzhen’s industrial design to steadily move forward under the protection of policies.

Breakthrough in Participation in International Exhibitions

In 2011, Shenzhen successfully overcame numerous difficulties and participated in the London 100% Design Exhibition, which is known as the “barometer of the world design field”. This can be regarded as an “ice breaking journey” in the history of China’s industrial design development and has milestone significance. Previously, Shenzhen’s industrial design was little known internationally. This exhibition has built a bridge for Shenzhen design enterprises and institutions to connect with the international community. By showcasing their works, Shenzhen industrial design has begun to gain international attention and recognition from the industry.

For three consecutive years, nearly a hundred Shenzhen brand enterprises and design agencies have appeared at the exhibition, gradually accumulating international reputation. By 2014, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the Shenzhen Municipal Government jointly organized a delegation to participate in the exhibition and established a “China Pavilion”, further expanding the influence of “Chinese design”. As an important force in this process, Shenzhen also elevated its position in the global industrial design landscape and opened the door to the world.

Platform construction for large-scale exhibitions and events

The first China (Shenzhen) International Industrial Design Week was held in 2007, which sparked a craze in the industrial design industry in Shenzhen. This event integrates various forms such as exhibitions, forums, and promotions, providing a showcase for local design forces. The exhibition hall showcases various industrial design works, including consumer electronics, home appliances, and medical devices. Local well-known enterprises such as Konka and FIYTA have exhibited their industrial design masterpieces, including award-winning works from international industrial design competitions.

Since then, the annual Industrial Design Week has continued to be held, with its influence expanding continuously, attracting more and more domestic and foreign enterprises and designers to participate, promoting the transformation of design results, advancing industrial design education and industry development, and becoming an important booster for the development of industrial design in Shenzhen.

Similarly, the first Shenzhen International Industrial Design Exhibition was held in 2013, with a 15000 square meter exhibition area becoming the largest industrial design exhibition in the world at that time, attracting many international industrial design industry experts. In the following decade, Dazhan continued to bring first-class international design concepts and products to Shenzhen, helping local emerging design teams grow and leading the continuous upgrading of Shenzhen’s industrial design.

The intrinsic driving force behind the demand for industrial transformation

In the early days, Shenzhen’s industrial design was mostly attached to the manufacturing industry and was in the position of “supporting role”. With the transformation and upgrading of Shenzhen’s manufacturing industry, the demand for enhancing product added value and building brand image has become increasingly urgent. The importance of industrial design has become increasingly prominent, gradually separating from the manufacturing industry and becoming a provider of complete design services.

Many manufacturing companies have begun to realize the value of design, increasing their investment in the design process and collaborating with professional design companies. For example, Shenzhen Naiste, which used to mainly produce low-end products such as garbage cans and was on the brink of bankruptcy, successfully transformed into a manufacturer in the medical device field with the help of a process and production process improvement plan provided by a design group, resulting in a significant increase in annual output value.

This demand for industrial transformation has prompted Shenzhen’s industrial design to continuously improve its professional level, expand its business areas, and shift from simple exterior design to comprehensive design services covering the entire product lifecycle, driving the industry to new heights.
